"Where did all the Martin family integrity go in just one generation?"

Kate doesn't say how she got a hold of this letter.  I'm going to assume that it is authentic.  The letter is published as a JPEG over at SDA.  I have typed it out for ease in distribution.

The Right Hon. Paul Martin, P.C., M.P.

Office of the Prime Minister

80 Wellington Street

Ottawa

May 20, 2005

Dear Mr. Martin:

I wept when I read about the enthusiastic endorsement that you, Prime Minister Paul Martin Jr., gave to a bill going through parliament legitimizing same-sex 'marriage'.

Your father, Paul Martin Sr., and your mother, would be spinning in their graves if they only knew what their son, Paul Martin Jr., was doing. I am 93 years old and knew your father and your family well back in Windosr where my wife and family of 8 children lived for 20 years. (My oldest son is a 72 years old Catholic priest still active in the U.S.) I remember you as a youngster running around the park with your father.

Your father, need I remind you, was a former Deputy Prime Minister in the Liberal government of the day and was a highly principled man who would never have tolerated such an aberration as a 'marriage' between two people of the same sex being legalized. When your father was given the ultimatum of opening wide the door to abortion in 1969 by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, he flatly refused and was shoved into the Senate. The abortion promoting bill your father turned down was given to the Hon. John Turner, then the former Minister of Justice, to push through parliament.

Where did all the Martin family integrity go in just one generation? What about the teachings of our Catholic faith regarding same-sex marriage, abortion and other family life issues? Are they to be ignored and set aside for political expediency? I am begging God, from my heart, that He will enlighten you, Paul Martin Jr., not to take the road that you are taking.

Prayerfully,

L. Earle Wicklum

Paul Martin Sr. was responsible for my own political epiphany.

Back when I was a young teenager, he was the federal Minister responsible for requiring us all to be numbered; i.e. he brought in the SIN.

There was much opposition and, in an effort to defuse that, he may be found quoted (in Hansard, I believe, and certainly in the newpapers) as claiming that the SIN would only be used to track CPP contributions.

I knew then that that was nonsense and, if I knew it young as I was, perforce so did he. Put bluntly I knew that he was consciously and intentionally telling a lie.

In fact, I believe that was about the only clear statement that that the old flannel mouth ever uttered publicly.

So much for his allegedly good moral character on which the letter relies.

The realization that everything politicians and government spokesman, of whatever persuasion, say contain a large measure of untruth, has saved me a lot of time over the years. I never bother to read or listen to what they say; I only watch what they do and figure out how to evade it.

Like father, like son.

It doesn't strike me as being very ethical of this website to publish that letter without the writer's permission....

You'd have to ask Kate at SDA about that. Once its up on a website it's public domain. I would doubt Kate would put something up without the author's express permission.
