“The reason our politicians are of such a low grade compared to the past, even considering the nostalgia factor, is that they are asked to perform an impossible balancing act. ……then what is required is not a leader but a secularized Messiah.”

As also mentioned in your excellent post “Laurier's Canada was a rapidly growing agrarian colony, not a post-industrial G7 country”. In an agricultural economy most politicians would have some or perhaps a lot of skill with the dynamics of agriculture. But today (in a digital, knowledge-based, global economy) a politician from Cross Canoe probably has zero experience or skill to match the job requirements.

Thus we find the Liberals still searching for a Messiah instead of developing an updated Red Book of policies because that won’t work again. The book would be too big for anyone to read and the diverse needs and wants of voters make would cause the Red Book sequel to be full of contradictions.

The solution? De-centralize. Reduce the taxes sent to Queen’s Park and Ottawa and leave more taxing capacity in local ridings where the issues are not as complicated for either to voter or the politicians.

We tend to speak of society in the singular. But our 'society' is not singular but rather made up of multiple societies sharing and opposing each other in hundreds of different ways.
In my own household for example, my partner would like to see the government abolish the military and give the money to the CBC, while I would like to see the government do exactly the opposite.
To quote the immortal Terry Pratchett:
"I'm sure we can all pull together, sir."
Lord Vetinari raised his eyebrows.
"Oh, I do hope not, I really do hope not.
Pulling together is the aim of despotism
and tyranny. Free men pull in all kinds of
directions." He smiled. "It's the only way
to make progress."

The captain of the ship of state has to navigate through all these conflicting shoals without sinking to ship. What a job!
